Day 11 Yulara

Many people warned us about the Northern Territory Road-trains before we left NSW and it’s not hard to see why. 53 meters of snorting and roaring motor guided by pilots with a fire in the belly and an angry past, intent on maximising their legal right to drive at 130Km/H on NT roads. While they may have an image of multi wheeled outlaws, the ones we’ve encountered have been absolute gentlemen. Every time we’ve seen one coming towards us, they’ve slowed right down and moved as far to the left as they could to avoid showering our windscreen with rocks or blowing us off the side of the road. They even give us a wave and I hope they stay as courteous all through the trip.
We had a fairly easy day today. After leaving Kulgera, we got to Erldunda (75Km), quicker than expected and from there, we turned left for The Rock. About 3 hours later, we were setting up the camper and preparing for a swim while planning tomorrow’s highlights. On the way to Yulara, we stopped in at Curtin Springs Roadhouse for a lunch break but unfortunately they’d seen the tourists coming and tried to charge us $11 for a cheese and tomato sandwich. It turned out to be a lucky break because as we settled down in some shade to make our own lunch, we were accosted by an overly friendly Emu. While the Emu wanted our bread it soon realised it had met its match when Tom tried out his own dance moves on the very surprised bird.
We finished the day with sunset Photo’s of both Uluru and The Olgas and the next few days promise a rejuvenation of both the body and the spirit.
Cheers,
Jorg
