It’s been an odd sort of day today, with running around getting tyres fixed, bookings confirmed and supplies organised, it’s been a bit like what I remember of working. Lots of stuff happening but no outcome today, for the effort of today.
We had a slow start to the day with me trying to convince Jacqui I understand the Windows Moviemaker program and Jacob trying to convince us he could read. Jacob would drag his fingers along a line in his Edward The Emu book looking earnestly at the words, doing all he could to convince us that sending him to school would be a waste of perfectly good sheckles. When this little show ended, it was time for the serious work of the day to begin.
I thought I’d fixed the slow-leaking tyre in Alice Springs but when I climbed up onto the spare yesterday to load something onto the roof rack, it was obvious the tyre was flat again. We dropped it in yesterday for collection today, only to be informed that I’d apparently run over an echidna. The tyre had literally dozens of tiny holes all around it and repair was no longer a possibility, so we began driving around looking for tyre retailers. All assured me the Echidna synopsis was the likely cause and not simply some bush yarn imposed upon hapless city folk visiting from the big smoke. After a couple of back-n-forth visits to confirm prices, I agreed to donate $275.00 to the local Beaurepairs dealership. Let’s hope I can dodge further echidnas.
While in town, Jacqui took the opportunity to add to her Pearl collection and I took the opportunity to book two nights in a beach-shack at Cape Leveque. We’re heading off in the early morning, leaving the van here at Broome and just in case the beach-shack is too much of a shack, we’re taking the tent along. The afternoon was spent packing jerry cans, sleeping bags and gas stoves onto the roof of the car and moving tools and rescue gear around in the back, to accommodate the esky and a few other essentials. Everyone we meet with whom we have a discussion about Cape Leveque is ebullient about the place to such a degree, I can’t put into words how much I’m looking forward to seeing if the Garden Of Eden created in my imagination, is matched by reality.
While I was organising our equipment, Jacqui took her 1st solo drive into Broome and headed to the local Woollies to ensure we didn’t run out of food while at the cape. She’s assured us that nobody is coming home hungry while she’s on duty. While she was making new friends at the local shopping centre, I looked around and realised we'd landed in a great little spot right here in Cable Beach Caravan Park, so I took a few photo’s of the leafy locale.
The usual afternoon swim, and then a BBQ by the pool finished the day nicely. If the Saltwater crocs of Cape Leveque are in agreement, I’ll be back in a few days.
Cheers,
Jorg
