Make that 8 times.
Who wouldá thought that we’d be here for 2 of the last 8 days in 8 years, when no dolphins turned up at Monkey Mia? We followed the same routine as yesterday. Down the beach at 7, sitting on the sand with all the other weird people, waiting, waiting, waiting. Finally it was 8am, and Zach and I got to leave the weird people on the beach, as we headed for the wharf and our half-day fishing charter.
It doesn’t get much better. We had perfect whether, a good crew, and 3 other good people on the boat with us. The half hour ride out to “The Shelf” had us primed and after a few quick words from the skipper, we baited up, dropped in our lines, and crossed our fingers. It didn’t take long with Zach and I catching the first three fish of the day. I started the ball rolling with a 40cm Black Snapper followed by another slightly larger, at 50cm. Zach chimed in with an even larger snapper at about 60cm and our fellow anglers began looking at us with envy in their eyes. In between all the legal fish, we pulled in a good half dozen “justunders” each and we finally got to see our deck-sharers pull in a range of quality meals. We saw Pink Snapper, more Black Snapper and a not often seen Bluebone, or Tusk Fish pulled in. All up, we had a great haul between us. As we were beginning to slow down, Zach snagged a Spanish Mackerel of almost a meter to round out the Dinters haul, and we were pretty happy with our efforts.
We headed back to shore and once we got to the wharfe, we collected our catch from the freezer, with Zach and I somehow being gifted an extra Black Snapper by the Skipper. With 5 members in the family, we were happy to have 5 fish for dinner.
Back at the van we had a Christmas Skype call with Mum & Barry and then a call to Martina & David before Zach and I pulled the fish out of the esky, cleaned them up, and began preparing a feast. As it turned out, Zach, Tom and I all had a whole Snapper on the BBQ while Jacqui and Jacob had Snapper fillets. One of the Mackerel fillets was BBQ’d with Chilli and herbs, while the other was marinated in an Indian Tiki paste, then BBQ’d. It was a feast and we had plenty of visitors at the BBQ plates, and then again at the table. We had plenty to share and everyone had a little taste.
We all pulled up stumps early after a day we’ll all remember for a long time. Zach is already asking, “When can we buy a boat Dad?”
Cheers,
Jorg
