Day 52 Kalbarri

It became obvious to us all at about 5am that the Anchorage Caravan Park here at Kalbarri is the home to local workers, rather than a park for the exclusive use of laid back & hedonistic holiday makers.
After an early breakfast, I headed into town with instructions to get a new battery for the car, and to come back with coffee. I spoke with the local auto electrician who in true country style advised me that I should get another couple of years out of the existing battery, thereby saving me about $170. I returned with coffee and a full wallet, and we got ourselves organised to visit Kalbarri National Park.
What a great day! The drive into the park was dominated by the four boys teasing Jacqui about mistakenly going into the Men’s toilet last night. She accidentally walked into the men’s thinking it was the ladies, and seeing it wasn’t as clean as earlier amenities blocks, Jacqui proceeded to grab the ever-present mop and began mopping out the showers. She couldn’t understand what the stainless steel thing in the corner was, but once Jacqui worked out later in the evening that she’d been to the wrong room, she was very happy no-one walked in, or out, while she was tidying up. Once we’d made it into the park, we found our way to a lookout for a few photos and then it was off to Natures Window.
Natures window was everything I expected it to be. Along with Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge, Natures Window was one of the real attractions of the west coast, and I haven’t been let down. The view was fantastic and was appreciated equally by Jacqui and the boys with everyone getting a heap out of the hike, as well as the natural beauty of the surroundings.
We had to wait around for a while as the group that arrived ahead of us took their pictures, so Jacqui, Zach and I played around with some low key rock-climbing while we waited.
After Natures Window, we found another spot that the boys were convinced had been discovered by their German Omi. It took a vile to explain to ze boys zat Z-Bend hadn’t been named by zer grandmuzer.
Back at the van, we spent some time on the School Diaries Tom and Zach have been working on before getting an unexpected visit from our Swiss backpackers. It looks like we’ll be having a Christmas-day drink with them at Cervantes and maybe a catch-up when we’re all in Sydney at the end of January.
Kalbarri National Park is easily one of the prettiest and most interesting National Parks we’ve visited and while we only had one day to enjoy it, it’s been a full and exciting day.
Cheers,
Jorg
