As the van rocked against the early morning darkness, it was instantly clear that the fringe winds of cyclone Laurence had finally caught up with us. We’ve been staying just ahead of any real whether but the morning sky clearly demonstrated that some effort would be required to stay ahead of the rains from here on. While the cyclone hasn’t delivered any rain to us directly, the temperatures have been dropping significantly with highs in the mid twenty’s being the norm during the past week. The mid forty’s we experienced during our first month were a little extreme but it’s what we’ve come to expect at Christmas, in Australia. Pulling up the doona at night seems a little strange considering what we’ve been through during the last 50 days.
We knew we had a long drive ahead of us today so we got started early and by 8:30, we were on the road to Cervantes. On the way, we were surprised to find a pink lake off the side of the road. We parked the car to have a bit of an explore, and we discovered the pink colour is created by the bacteria, Dunaliella salina, being caught in the salt. The lake is best viewed at dusk but as the pictures show, the early morning colour is also quite remarkable.
After an otherwise unremarkable drive, we settled into the Pinnacles Caravan Park and despite the wind, managed to get the full van and annex set up in a reasonable time. Jacqui took a drive around town and was a little disheartened to find that Cervantes has no shops other than a General Store and a Surf shop. She also discovered that there are no restaurants open on Christmas Day so it looks like we’ll be spending some time tonight trying to find somewhere within 150km where we can find prawns and ham for Christmas lunch.
Cheers,
Jorg
